Rubio Monocoat Hybrid Wood Protector is a high-performance, one-coat wood oil developed to colour and protect almost all types of exterior timber. It combines Rubio Monocoat’s unique molecular bonding technology with integrated UV stabilisers, providing durable protection against weathering, moisture and discolouration while preserving the natural beauty of the wood.

Unlike conventional exterior coatings, Hybrid Wood Protector does not create a film on the surface. Instead, it bonds with the upper wood fibres, allowing the timber to retain its natural look and feel. The finish will not peel, crack or flake, making future maintenance significantly easier.

Its rich pigmentation enhances the wood grain and provides a natural matt appearance. Hybrid Wood Protector is suitable for both horizontal and vertical exterior surfaces, including decking, façades, cladding, fences, gates, pergolas, shutters, doors, windows and garden furniture.

The highly concentrated formula offers excellent coverage and requires only a small amount of product. For faster curing and optimum durability, Hybrid Wood Protector can be combined with the dedicated Accelerator component.

Surface Preparation

For the best possible result, the wood must be clean, dry and free from previous coatings, grease, dirt and contamination. New, weathered or previously treated timber should be prepared correctly before application.

Cleaning with Rubio Monocoat Exterior Wood Cleaner is recommended before applying Hybrid Wood Protector. Proper preparation improves the penetration of the product, ensures more uniform colour development and helps maximise durability.

Application

Apply a small amount of Hybrid Wood Protector evenly using a suitable flat brush, working in the direction of the wood grain. Allow the product to react with the wood and spread it carefully to avoid overlaps or excessive build-up.

On horizontal surfaces, remove all excess product before drying. The surface should not appear wet, sticky or heavily coated after application.

Maintenance

Exterior wood should be inspected regularly, especially in areas exposed to strong sunlight, rain or frequent use. When the colour begins to fade or the timber starts to show signs of weathering, clean the surface thoroughly and apply a maintenance coat.

Because Hybrid Wood Protector does not form a surface film, complete sanding is normally unnecessary when maintenance is carried out on time.

💡 Professional Tip

Always make a colour test on the actual wood before starting the full application. The final appearance may vary depending on the wood species, natural colour, grain, preparation method and exposure conditions.

For decking and other horizontal surfaces, apply the product very thinly and remove all excess carefully. Overapplication can lead to extended drying times, uneven appearance or a sticky surface.

When working on large areas, divide the surface into manageable sections and maintain a wet edge to minimise visible overlaps. Avoid applying the product in direct sunlight, on hot timber or when rain is expected shortly after application.

What is Rubio Monocoat Hybrid Wood Protector?
Rubio Monocoat Hybrid Wood Protector is a highly concentrated exterior wood oil designed to colour and protect almost all types of outdoor wood in a single coat.

Where can Hybrid Wood Protector be used?
It is suitable for exterior timber surfaces such as decking, façades, cladding, garden furniture, fences, gates, shutters, windows and doors.

How many coats are required?
Hybrid Wood Protector is designed as a genuine one-coat system. One correctly applied coat is normally sufficient to colour and protect the wood.

What type of finish does it provide?
It provides a natural matt finish that enhances the colour and grain of the timber without forming a thick film on the surface.

Does Hybrid Wood Protector provide UV protection?
Yes. The formulation contains integrated UV stabilisers that help reduce discolouration and weathering caused by exterior exposure.

Will the finish peel or flake?
No. Hybrid Wood Protector is non-film-forming, so it penetrates and bonds with the wood rather than creating a surface coating that can peel or flake.

Is it suitable for all wood species?
It is suitable for almost all types of exterior wood. However, the final colour can vary depending on the wood species, preparation and natural colour of the timber. A test application is always recommended.

How should the wood be prepared?
The surface must be clean, dry and free from dirt, grease, contamination and previous coatings. Exterior Wood Cleaner should be used before application to ensure proper preparation and colour development.

Can it be applied over an existing coating?
Old coatings and previous finishes should be completely removed so that Hybrid Wood Protector can bond properly with the bare wood.

How is Hybrid Wood Protector applied?
Apply a small amount evenly with a suitable flat brush. Allow the product to react for approximately 10 minutes and remove all excess product from horizontal surfaces before allowing the wood to dry.

How long does it take to dry?
Under suitable application conditions, the surface should normally be allowed to dry for approximately 24 hours. Drying time may vary depending on temperature, humidity, ventilation and wood type.

What is the Hybrid Wood Protector Accelerator?
The Accelerator is an optional component that can be mixed with Hybrid Wood Protector to speed up curing and provide optimal protection.

Does Hybrid Wood Protector contain VOCs?
Hybrid Wood Protector contains 0% VOC and does not contain water or solvents.

How is the surface maintained?
Clean the wood thoroughly with Exterior Wood Cleaner and apply a new maintenance coat of Hybrid Wood Protector when the colour or protection begins to fade. Complete sanding is normally not required when the existing finish is properly maintained.

Can Hybrid Wood Protector be used by DIY users?
Yes. Its one-coat application and straightforward maintenance make it suitable for both professional and experienced DIY use, provided the preparation and application instructions are followed carefully.
